It seems that you suffer from reading comprehension deficiencies.
You blame the columnist for anachronism, by suggesting that the writer mixes the cause (the fall of socialism and he eastern bloc) and the result (Saadat's decision to side with the USA), while in fact the writer specifically writes that Saadat showed foresight and saw that the fall of the Soviet Union is inevidable, and therefore switched sides in advance.
